2016-17 AD4500 Illustration Studio Practice 1

INTRODUCTION TO THE MODULE

This module is a core module for full time students; the guide covers most of the planned projects and workshop activities for the duration of the year. The timetable of some activities may vary according to availability of practical resources throughout the year.
Students will be able to access information regarding the module using moodle and the studio notice boards.
Students are expected to attend for the duration of the module and refrain from eating or drinking in the studios and workshops. Personal headphones and music are not permitted during taught classes.

Students are introduced to Illustration through a series of projects that are underpinned by different approaches to drawing. These projects include: Observational drawing, picture-making and composition, constructing narrative, sequencing, image-text relationships, simple hand-made books, object-making etc. Student are also encouraged to orientate and locate themselves within the studios, workshops and the wider London cultural environment through a series of interconnecting themes/projects.

The key issues raised by these projects are examined through a seminar and critique based discourse. A critical awareness and the relationships between different media and languages, and the nature of the work they generate is discussed.
Students’ progress is informed and supported by formative assessment and feedback at a mid-year review.
